Indexing is the process by which search engines store and organize web page content in their database (index) so it can be retrieved and displayed in search results.
After a search engine crawls a page, it analyzes the content and decides whether to add it to its index. Not all crawled pages get indexed — Google may choose not to index pages with thin content, duplicate content, or pages blocked by noindex tags. You can check indexing status in Google Search Console using the URL Inspection tool. Common indexing issues include pages blocked by robots.txt, noindex meta tags, canonical tag pointing to another page, server errors, and orphan pages (pages with no internal links pointing to them). To ensure your pages get indexed, submit an XML sitemap, build internal links to important pages, create unique and valuable content, and use the URL Inspection tool to request indexing for new or updated pages.
