What is Bounce Rate?

Bounce rate is the percentage of visitors who leave your website after viewing only one page, without taking any further action like clicking a link, filling out a form, or navigating to another page.

Bounce Rate Explained in Detail

A high bounce rate usually indicates that visitors did not find what they were looking for, or that the page failed to engage them. However, context matters — a blog post that fully answers a question may have a high bounce rate but still be successful. In Google Analytics 4, bounce rate is calculated differently than in Universal Analytics; it is now the inverse of engagement rate. A visitor is considered "bounced" if their session was not engaged (lasted less than 10 seconds, had no conversion events, and had fewer than 2 page views). Generally, a bounce rate between 26-40% is excellent, 41-55% is average, and above 70% may need improvement. To reduce bounce rate, improve page load speed, create compelling content, use clear CTAs, and ensure your page matches the search intent.
